Company History
Credit Union Wireless was formed in the fall of 1994 under the name MaPS Wireless, a subsidiary of MaPS Credit Union based in Salem Oregon. When we formed MaPS Wireless, our goal was simply to offer discounted cellular services exclusively to MaPS Credit Union members. After two years of success in the cellular telephone business, MaPS Wireless secured a larger discount for its members by negotiating a long-term contract with a new partner, AT&T Wireless, to continue to offer cellular technology.
Over the next three years, MaPS Wireless Services signed up thousands of credit union subscribers. As the program grew, interest from other credit unions inquiring how they might offer wireless services to their members also be began to grow. At the same time, AT&T Wireless was encouraging us to transition into its wholesale wireless program, enabling MaPS Wireless to offer even greater discounts and flexibility to our members as well as the ability to offer our program to other credit unions and their members.
In June 2002, we accepted the challenge and became a full-fledged reseller, changing our name to Credit Union Wireless and offering cellular services to the entire credit union industry. Our program has been growing ever since. In December 2004, AT&T Wireless merged with Cingular Wireless, creating the largest wireless carrier with the largest network in the United States. This further strengthened our position as a nationwide service provider.
Today, Credit Union Wireless has matured into a sought after service partner in the competitive world of Credit Union Service Organizations, offering credit unions a wide variety of services and rate plans to meet their members’ needs. This unique partnership benefits credit unions by providing them a unique offering to set them apart from their peers, and benefits their members by providing a low-cost alternative for wireless service.
